Wo Peng Cuisine: Reviews & Ratings

Wo Peng is located in the fairly old hotel, Furama. However, the restaurant isn't too shabby. In fact, it gives me a familiar Cantonese resto vibe, which I enjoy actually. Staff are suitably friendly, and dishes are by and large authentic & yummy. More hits than misses. Now on to the food!! 1) yusheng / lohei - this was a delight. The mock salmon looked positively real. Whilst tasty enough, the slightly hypochondriac me was wondering if it was made out of many chemicals. Hahahaha. One lovely bit was the crispy fish skin!!! I don't think I've ever had yusheng with crispy fish skin which provided a lovely crunchy texture to this age-old dish. 2) double-boiled superior soup with almonds - oh, this i LURVED!!!! Wow! Just so ambrosial and heavenly. Soup lovers would be over the moon with this one. Guaranteed. Seriously. 3) poon Choy - Award-winning Chef Julian Tam supposedly was the first to introduce this Cantonese dish to Singapore. And his version is authentic and doesn't disappoint. Chockful of expensive delicacies like abalone, dried scallops, fish maw, sea cucumber, shrimp, meats and veggies go into that claypot. The sauce is phenomenal and warrants a bowl of white rice. Yes, the rice is a MUST. 4) sautéed "peach resin" with egg white - ok, this dish didn't look too appetizing but the flavors were tremendously delicious. The egg whites and some century eggs (I could be mistaken with the latter) and veggies.... They all went together like nutella and toast. Very awesome. 5) wild cod fish - it looked like art, like a calligraphic painting. Very interesting way of cooking it - if you notice, the filleted fish is fried but the fish slices are steamed and placed by the side. How perfectly contrasting! Me likey!!! Mucho!!! 6) roasted duck - while yummy, it didn't strike me as fantastic. Nothing out of the ordinary. But yummy nonetheless. 7) glutinous rice with Chinese sausages - yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!!!!!!!! What a way to end with this staple! I don't know why, but I enjoyed this laap mei faan very much. The Chinese sausages went terrifically well with the sticky rice. A true winner. 8) custard buns - honestly, this was a let down and the worst dish of the night. The skin (bun) was tough, and the custard was watery. A pity, cos it looked so yummy! All in all, I really really enjoyed my meal. Chef Julian came out to say hi to us and he is friendliest, most humble and humorous chef.
